Homework
At Cordwalles, we recognise the role of homework in supporting children’s learning. We take an evidence-based approach to homework, as the EEF guidance (2024) suggests that homework "has an impact by enabling pupils to undertake independent learning to practice and consolidate skills, conduct in-depth enquiry, prepare for lessons or revise for exams." Research also shows that homework can help build good study habits and reinforce classroom learning.
In line with guidance, we therefore use the following "Active Ingredients" to set homework:
-
High quality, rather than quantity
-
Well-designed tasks that are linked to classroom learning
-
Clearly set aims
-
Understanding and addressing any potential barriers to completion, such as access a Friday lunchtime homework club to support those who need extra time
-
Explicitly taught independent learning strategies
-
High-quality feedback
-
Monitoring of the impact of homework on children's engagement, progress and attainment
Our goal is to foster positive attitudes toward learning both in and out of school and build foundational skills that will benefit children in the long run.
What to Expect at Cordwalles
Weekly homework is set on Friday and due in the following Thursday. It can be found on ClassDojo:
-
An online maths task
-
An English worksheet
-
A set of spellings, linked to the current spelling rule.
Children are expected to read aloud to a parent or carer at least 4 times per week. An optional "Enrichment challenge" is also set half termly to allow children to explore their wider curriculum further with the chance to earn Dojo points!
